Cargo bikes in Basel – a small success story

In recent years, the range of cargo bikes on offer has literally exploded. Many new models have come onto the market, and you can now see an impressive variety of them on the streets of Basel. One reason for this is undoubtedly the early and bold support provided by the canton of Basel-Stadt from 2016 onwards – which is rare by Swiss standards – and which has boosted sales. Today, it is mainly families who, quite naturally, use cargo bikes instead of cars to get about.

Why we chose the Rapid from Radkutsche

We had previously been using an Omnium Cargo Titanium without a motor and with a trailer. A great bike – but with three children, we were increasingly reaching the limits of its capacity and our own physical strength. So we looked for a robust, reliable, yet fast means of transport for everyday use. After much comparison and research, we kept coming back to the same model: the Radkutsche RAPID. The design based on a classic steel frame, the high load-bearing capacity and the well-thought-out details really won us over. What’s more, Radkutsche provided us with very expert advice and plenty of patience throughout the process.

Our specification

We opted for the Rapid with almost the full range of features:
• Metal body with Vaude fabric rain and sun protection
• Two benches with backrests (for up to four children!)
• Sturdy, easy-to-clean seat cushions with secure and easy-to-use harness systems
• Bosch Cargoline mid-drive motor (belt-driven) with Rohloff gear system
• Magura MT5 brakes

Despite its considerable kerb weight, the Rapid handles very nimbly. Once in motion, it feels almost like a normal city bike – particularly in urban traffic. What we particularly like:
+ Very good acceleration, even when fully loaded
+ A safe, confident ride, even with three or four children on board
+ Strong braking performance, which is important given the high kerb weight
+ Robust build quality – nothing rattles or feels makeshift
Naturally, carrying a heavy load leads to greater wear and tear: after five months, the brake pads already needed replacing for the first time. But that was to be expected.

Minor shortcomings in everyday use

As much as we like our Rapid, there are a few areas where we’d like to see improvements:
• Turning circle: The turning circle is relatively large. It’s almost impossible to turn quickly in tight spaces.
• Kickstand: The kickstand is stable, but often needs a little ‘nudge’ before setting off to lock into place properly.
• Pushing aid: Works reliably, but kicks in a bit too late for our liking.
• Space for older children: With children aged 4–5 and above, legroom gets a bit tight with three or four passengers – which can lead to the odd argument.
• Battery: Inserting and removing the battery is a bit fiddly at first. It gets easier with practice.

Practicality: well thought-out and reliable

Everyday advantages:
• The storage space between the front bench and the soft top is ideal for bags.
• The bike fits just about, but easily, through our 80-cm cellar door.
• Overall, the fittings are extremely durable and of high quality.

Conclusion: A FANTASTIC everyday and work bike for families
After over 2,400 kilometres, we can say: our Rapid makes our daily lives considerably easier and completely replaces the car for us in town. It offers enough capacity for three children, luggage and spontaneous shopping trips. For families looking for a reliable, super-robust and versatile cargo bike, the Rapid is definitely the best option on the market!
